World Economic Forum ranks the world's best computer science programs

Two of Ontario's elite universities, the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo, turned up in the World Economic Forum (WEF)'s list of the best computer science schools. WEF used the QS University Rankings, by QS Digital Solutions (QS), to rate schools offering computer sciences and information systems courses. QS University Rankings are one of the most reputable guides to post-secondary institutions in the world.

The University of Waterloo ties with Cornell University for 11th best computer science program

The University of Waterloo tied with Cornell University for 11th in North America and 26th globally, according to WEF, ranking ahead of CalTech, National Taiwan University and Seoul National University. Founded in 1967, the University of Waterloo's school of computer science has grown to become the largest academic computer science research centre in Canada, ranking 10th in North America and 24th in the world. It's no wonder the Kitchener-Waterloo Region was found to have the world's second highest number of start-ups per capita by a 2014 Compass report.

The University of Toronto is a top 10 best computer science school

WEF ranked the University of Toronto seventh in North America and 11th in the world, ahead of global rivals: UCLA, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the University of Tokyo. In addition to having Canada's best computer science program, the University of Toronto is Canada's largest and top ranked university, and is home to pioneers in artificial intelligence, augmented reality and wearable technology, among others.

QS: Canada's educational system ranks in the top 5 globally

QS also named Canada a global top five educational system. Half of the Canadian universities added to their list of the top 300 schools for higher education in the world are located in Ontario, including the University of Toronto, McMaster University, the University of Waterloo, Western University and Queen's University.
