Salary range: $100,293 - $120,827
Term: This is a contractual position for the duration of 1 year.
Location: 250 Yonge Street, Toronto ON (5 days per week in office)

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

We are seeking interests from passionate individuals for the role of Portfolio Lead, Technology and Agri-Food. This is a highly collaborative role that requires strong relationship management skills, strategic thinking, and a client-focused approach. This is a level 8, unionized position represented by AMAPCEO.

The Portfolio Lead, Technology and Agri-Food provides support to the Executive Director by reviewing and advising team members on who to engage with as sector stakeholders, where to generate leads and develop strategic investment opportunities. Works with the Executive Director and Investment Leads to identify and build a data driven list of targets

Working together with the other Portfolio Leads and the Business Development team at IvO, the Portfolio Lead, Technology and Agri-Food will support the Executive Director, Technology in establishing project/resource requirements and plans, recommending team composition and staffing requirements, managing project budgets, and supervising project/contract resources as required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Investment Attraction, Negotiations and Decision-making Support

Secures large-scale strategic investments:

  • Provides support to Executive Director by reviewing and advising team members on who to engage with as sector stakeholders, where to generate leads and develop strategic investment opportunities.
  • Works with Executive Director and Investment Leads to identify and build a data driven list of targets.
  • Positions Ontario to secure new investment by understanding client operations, costs structures, and investment needs.
  • Provides detailed analysis to Executive Director on potential investment opportunities as they pertain to short and long-term financial, operational, and strategic benefits for province of Ontario
  • Demonstrates and articulate a strong value proposition and support the client or investor throughout the decision-making process.
  • Recognizes patterns to interpret implications, ascertain solutions and make recommendations.
  • Ensures the agency provides an exceptional investor experience.
  • Leverages relevant resources and expertise (Invest Ontario/provincial and federal government/ecosystem partners) to support investor engagement and to close investment deals.
  • Serves as primary client interface, cultivating strategic relationships across all levels and relevant functions in the client organization.
  • Observes, identifies, and organizes information to detect underlying issues related to access and/or delivery of investor services
  • Works with prospective investors to provide a customized and coordinated suite of support.
  • Reviews and supports the preparation of materials used in investment attractions and decision-making, including investment memoranda, board presentations, and pitchbooks.
  • Reviews and provide guidance on the development of term sheets.
  • Reviews and advice on development of all investment funding contract agreements, providing transitional support for announcements and administration of project

Program Development and Project Management

Provide oversight and team leadership to staff on multi-functional teams formed on an investment-by-investment basis to service and secure strategic investment leads. Teams may include members from across the agency, provincial government, and other levels of government:

  • Establish project/resource requirements and plans, recommend team composition and staffing requirements, manages project budgets, and supervises project/contract resources as required.
  • Leverages programs and expertise (Invest Ontario/provincial and federal government/ecosystem partners) to support investor engagement and to close investment deals.
  • Ensure consistent and clear communication between internal and external stakeholders and oversee communication to ensure consistency in messaging and alignment with business objectives.
  • Lead the development of strong, cooperative relationships with internal and external partners, investors, and colleagues to build long term relationships that foster collaboration and partnership.
  • Enables business and investor access to government services, programs, business intelligence, competitor jurisdictions, term sheet development, investment partnership liaison, infrastructure and site selection, talent, and human capital programs, permit and regulation liaison, and financial supports, assessment and analysis.

Sector (Technology and Agri-Food) Expertise

Collaborates internally to provide company and sectoral insights:

  • Supports translating needs to competitive term sheets, negotiations, and an overall smooth execution of end-to-end account management processes.
  • Monitors domestic and international developments that impact investment in Technology and Agri-Food sectors.

Stakeholder Relationships

  • Promotes relationships with targeted firms to enlist engagement and linkages across corporate structures, from CEOs and VP’s to plant management and staff.
  • Develops consultation frameworks and plans; co-ordinates and leads consultation processes related to specific investment opportunities
  • Advice and consults with key influencers regarding specific investments in Ontario's Technology and Agri-Food sectors and secures support in identifying and securing leads.
  • Links investors with local networks and innovation ecosystems

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • University degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Economic Development or a degree in a related field of study such as Computer Science, Life Sciences, Engineering and Applied Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience. MBA or relevant graduate degree is an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in business development role.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to oversee work of team members, provide guidance and support and review work.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy from concept to closure.
  • Brings an established network and credibility as a sector or industry leader with deep knowledge of emerging trends, business models, investment mandates, and priorities in these key sectors: technology and agri-food.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the capital markets, as well as a thorough understanding of key metrics and decision-making factors for companies in the industry.
  • Understands the ecosystem and market both in Ontario, and internationally and stays apprised of current developments and future trends.
  • Understanding of the site selection process and different site score models
  • A strong understanding of macroeconomics, markets trends, competitor activities, industry dynamics, logistics and customer trends in the sector.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with senior internal and external stakeholders and the ability to simplify complex topics for delivery to different audiences.
