Invest Ontario Supports Construction of Generation Mining's Marathon Copper-Palladium Processing Facility
Source:
Funding will help build a key processing facility in Northwestern Ontario, creating hundreds of jobs, attracting investment and strengthening Ontario's critical minerals supply chain.
TORONTO, Ontario, September 18, 2026 – Invest Ontario is providing up to $11 million in conditional loan support through Ontario's Critical Minerals Processing Fund (CMPF) to help Generation Mining Limited build its wholly owned Copper-Palladium Processing Facility at the Marathon Project in Northwestern Ontario.
The facility accounts for approximately $410 million of the Marathon Project's total $992 million capital investment and represents a major addition to Ontario's critical minerals sector. Once operational, the project is expected to create more than 450 direct jobs, including over 100 positions at the processing facility and approximately 350 mining jobs. Construction is also expected to support about 800 additional jobs. Together, these opportunities will create good-paying careers, support local businesses and contractors, and drive economic growth across Northwestern Ontario.
Invest Ontario's support will help move the fully permitted, construction-ready project toward development. In addition to financial support, Invest Ontario has worked with Generation Mining to connect the company with strategic partners as the project progressed.
The Copper-Palladium Processing Facility will strengthen Ontario's critical minerals value chain by processing minerals mined in the province into materials used by manufacturers in Canada and around the world. Demand for copper and palladium continues to grow as industries invest in electrification, advanced manufacturing and defence.
Copper plays a critical role in electric vehicles, power transmission systems and clean energy infrastructure. Palladium supports emissions-reduction technologies and a range of industrial applications. By expanding Ontario's processing capacity, the facility will help secure a reliable supply of critical minerals for manufacturers, strengthen domestic supply chains and capture more economic value within the province.
The project is also expected to generate opportunities for local businesses, contractors and Indigenous-owned companies throughout Northwestern Ontario. Generation Mining has established agreements with neighbouring Indigenous communities and continues to prioritize Indigenous participation in the project's development. This approach will help ensure economic benefits remain in the region while creating long-term employment and skills-development opportunities for local communities.
Ontario's abundant critical mineral resources, highly skilled workforce and competitive mining sector continue to attract investment from around the world. Projects such as Marathon help bring private capital into the province, create jobs and secure the materials needed to support Ontario's growing manufacturing, clean technology and industrial sectors.
As one of the most mineral-rich regions in the world, Northern Ontario plays a critical role in supporting the economic objectives and industrial capabilities of Canada and its allies. By supporting Generation Mining’s Marathon Project, our government is protecting the resilience and self-reliance of the province’s critical mineral supply chain and delivering on its commitment to keep minerals mined in Ontario processed and refined in Ontario, by our world-class workers.
Hon. Vic Fedeli
Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade
I want to thank the Government of Ontario for standing behind the Marathon Project. Minister Lecce, Minister Fedeli and their teams, together with Invest Ontario, have been true partners through this process, and their support helps carry Marathon from permits and plans into construction. Ontario has been clear about its ambition to lead on critical minerals, and we are proud to help deliver on it. We look forward to working with the Province and with Canada to build the next critical minerals mine in this country.
Jamie Levy
President and Chief Executive Officer, Generation Mining Limited
Ontario's competitive advantage in critical minerals goes beyond the resources in the ground. It comes from our ability to help companies move strategic projects forward. We're proud to support Generation Mining's investment in Marathon, which will create jobs, strengthen supply chains and reinforce Ontario's role as a reliable source of the materials needed by global manufacturers. This is exactly the type of investment that helps build a stronger, more resilient economy for Ontario.
